Military Science Laboratories

MS Labs are conducted every Thursday afternoon during the academic semester. Labs are a supplement to classroom instruction, providing cadets with practical, hands-on experience in leader tasks and helping to prepare them for the National Advanced Leadership Course at Fort Lewis, Washington.

MS Labs are normally planned and executed by MS IV Cadets who instruct and evaluate lower level cadets through the training. Tasks trained during MS Labs include land navigation, individual movement techniques, patrolling activities, and rappelling to name a few.

Field Leadership Reaction Course

The Field Leadership Reaction Course (FLRC) is a series of timed obstacles to be negotiated by an infantry squad. Each obstacle represents a problem which must be overcome for the squad to accomplish its mission. At each obstacle, a new squad leader is designated from the squad, who receives a brief set of instructions from an evaluator. The squad leader must then follow the Troop Leading Procedures and direct the squad to accomplish its mission. During the timed event, the squad leader is evaluated on his/her ability to effectively communicate, command & control the squad, implement the Problem-Solving Process, and react to change.

SROTC Cadets will encounter the FLRC at a minimum at the Leader's Training Course (Ft. Knox, KY), and the National Advanced Leadership Course (Ft. Lewis, WA). They may also have the opportunity to execute this training during the academic year. Wentworth Military Academy has an FLRC on its campus, and Wentworth SROTC cadets normally execute the FLRC at least once per year.
