Counseling
and guidance services are provided to cadets in several ways. Central to
such services is a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling
program, largely administered by a cadet’s academic advisor. Our
program, similar to one that has been mandated in the public school
systems of more than 14 states, ensures that all cadets receive guidance
services consistent with their level of development.
An important part of the academic advisor’s role is helping each cadet
establish realistic, educational plans in support of long-term goals.
Central to this effort is the use of a computer-assisted career guidance
system. Such programs help each cadet gain a better understanding of him
or herself, explore the world of work for possible career choices and
identify possible educational paths for careers which may be of
particular interest.
The Advisor Program is an extension of the Academy's emphasis on college
planning. All cadets are assigned to faculty members whom become the
cadet's advisor during regularly scheduled academic counseling. The
advisor plays an important role in helping each cadet take appropriate
courses to ensure academic success. Because the advisor is only assigned
a small number of cadets for this purpose, the advisor is able to
provide more individual attention. Normally, the advisor remains
assigned to the same cadet for the duration of his/her stay at the
Academy.
An extensive number of college admissions and other standardized tests
are administered each academic year. National examinations such as the
PSAT, PLAN, ACT, SAT are administered at the academy throughout the
year. All cadets are required to take the ACT and SAT at least once
during their junior and senior year.
